Plants and its Connection with Earth and Space Systems

Soil is the essential source of life for many organisms and humans. Throughout this unit the grade 3 students will learn how important soil is for living things how its importance in sustaining life. The connection with soil and life systems closely relates to those seen in growth and change in plants.

Class Activity:

The grade 3 class will use their creative imaginations to problem solve for NASA.

NASA has asked the students for their assistance in building green houses in space for astronauts on missions. These astronauts will be using these grown plants as a form of food source for the next month.

The students must figure out oxygen content needed for the soil and growth of the seeds as well as source to contain all of these plants.

Here is a link to the transformation from seed to mature plant.

With the completion of this activity, students have aquired scientific and experimentation skills to make the appropriate predictions and investigations.

Field Trip: Understanding the growth and changes in plants

Black Creek Pioneer Village is more than a collection of buildings and artifacts. Here, you will become immersed in the lifestyles, customs, and surroundings of early residents who built the foundations for modern Toronto and Ontario at the typical crossroads community village found in the Toronto area during the 1800's.
